Muslim Burial Rites
Preparing the Body for Burial
Before the burial, the body is washed by a family member or other Muslims of the same gender. This procedure is known as ghusl. Thereafter, the body is shrouded in a plain white cloth known as a kafan.
Lowering the Body into the Ground
During the burial, the body is lowered into the ground without a coffin. The deceased will be buried facing the Qibla (the direction towards the Kaaba in the Sacred Mosque in Mecca).
Recitation of Funeral Sermon
Once the burial is done, a funeral sermon is read at the grave of the deceased.
